Christians Should Expect God’s Power to Work Through Us

“He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority, but you will receive the power of the Holy Spirit which will come on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to earth’s remotest end.” – Acts 1:7-8

It is so clear that God wants to do such powerful things through Christians. He tells us that our faith can move mountains and that He’s sending us His Holy Spirit to BE our power. And yet I–and probably most of us–think in terms of this being metaphorical or even mythical. We believe in God, but our faith in Him using us for anything more spectacular than what we could do on our own anyway, is not strong at all.

This verse strikes me so much as I think of my recent healing. I longed for ages to be healed, and even to just have the security of knowing that I would be healed, and when. But Yeshua said that it is better that we don’t know when Abba will do things. In retrospect it is so clear to me how perfect the timing was. It was more painful because the suffering went on for so much longer than I’d have chosen, but I learned so much, leaned on Abba so much, and the moment of healing struck me to the core, with so much more impact for all the growth I had gone through. It was not for me to know the time, but Abba DID send the Holy Spirit. I received the Holy Spirit and His healing in that moment, but I also got to glimpse His power in my spiritual director.

THAT is what He wants to do in us Christians. He’s promised us His power and we don’t expect much of it–not most of us. But those who do, like my spiritual director–the Holy Spirit can work powerfully through them.

“And you will be my witnesses.” I long to be such a channel of the Holy Spirit. Please join me in praying: Holy Spirit, open me wide so that so much of You can flow through me.
