Emile Bayard was born on November 2, 1837 in France. He is best known for his illustration of Cosette for Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, shown above. He started publishing cartoons when he was just fifteen, and he worked for magazines for many years before moving into illustrating novels. Literary works he created art for include Les Mis, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon. His illustration of Cosette was later adapted into the widely recognized logo for the Les Mis musical.
Below is pictured Bayard’s illustration of Gavroche from Les Mis.
