Die Freuden des Landlebens by Jean-Baptiste Pater

Posted on

Jean-Baptiste Pater was a French painter born on December 29, 1695.  He was a rococo artist.

Rococo art was a movement which developed in France in response to the Baroque style.  Artists felt that Baroque art was too rigid, that following its stiff rules of symmetry and greatness was too confining, and so developed Rococo.  The new style was more playful and humorous, but still ornate.  It reached a height toward the end of the 18th century.

Pater’s art is a reflection of that era.  His paintings are lighthearted, and he used the typical pastel palette of rococo artists.
