Frontispiece of A Christmas Carol by John Leech

John Leech was born on August 29, 1817.  He was a caricaturist, illustrating particularly for humorous magazines and satirical literature.  Lithograph work and wood engraving were his specialties.

Perhaps some of his most loved (and most lovable!) work is found in Charles Dickens’ first edition of A Christmas Carol.  He brings the characters to life–quite a feat when most of them are ghosts!  He is particularly talented in capturing the spirit (yes, pun intended) of the story, bringing out its humor while still drawing the viewer into a deeper appreciation for the story’s message.
