I love La Lecture by Renoir. It’s a painting I really relate to. The scene is of two girls who resemble in uncanny accuracy myself and my best friend Emily. We’ve always had much in common, but one thing we have especially bonded over is books–and movies, or anything with a story into which we could immerse ourselves together. We could talk all night about our favorite books. This painting captures the delight we have always taken in that priceless time together.
On a level more applicable to anyone’s life, I love this painting because it depicts the charming warmth one feels when curling up with a good book, particularly when sharing the moment with a dear friend. Because it’s those pure, simple activities, even if not a word is said, that sometimes create the deepest bonds of friendship.
