Andrei Ryabushkin was a Russian painter born on October 29, 1861. He painted 17th century Russia, particularly focusing on the everyday lives of the people there. Unfortunately, because of this, his paintings weren’t widely accepted. The people wanted something more “beautiful,” more dramatic with more flair. They weren’t interested in seeing reproductions of the lives they were already living.
However, his work is valuable for people today. It is an accurate depiction of life there, a way for viewers to step through a doorway to Russia of the past. A way to experience life with the people who lived it.
Shown below are Wedding Train in the 17th Century Moscow and A Young Man Breaking into the Girls’ Dance, and the Old Women are in Panic.
