Jean-Antoine Watteau was born on October 10, 1684 in France. His style was Baroque, and he re-introduced color and a lively motion to his work in a time when the subject matter of art was much more rigid and less joyful. He painted Italian comedy and ballet with a dramatic flair and charm. He met his passion for art when he became an assistant for painter Claude Gillot, where he was exposed to expelled actors who now modeled for Gillot. This introduction led to the dawning of his own artistic focus. His own work became characterized by elegance and drama.
Pictured below are Mezzetin (one of his most famous), The Love Song, and The Country Dance.
