Pauline Baynes was born on September 9, 1922 in Hove, Sussex, England. She was an illustrator, best recognized for the pictures she drew for books by C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.
Baynes spent a year volunteering for the Ministry of Defense, but was sent to the map making department where she learned the skills that would eventually lead to her maps of Narnia and Middle Earth. But her work spanned far greater subjects than the lay of the land alone; the author friends both loved her work, and she created countless illustrations for many of their works.
