View of the Interior of the Colosseum by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg

Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg was born on January 2, 1783 in Denmark.  He was the son of Henrik Vilhelm Eckersberg, who was a painter and carpenter.  Christoffer followed in his father’s footsteps and pursued his own art, becoming one of the first painters of the Golden Age of Danish Painting.

Eckersberg was best known for his portraits, marine scenes, and scenes of everyday life.  He learned and then taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Art, and he earned the reputation of Father of Danish painting.  His travels included time spent in Rome, a time during which he produced many notable landscapes of the sights there.

Below are shown Rainbow at Sea with some Cruising Ships and A View through Three Arches of the Third Storey of the Colosseum.
