An Enchanted Island by Francis Danby

Francis Danby was best known for his dramatic landscapes.  He belonged to what is now known as the Bristol School, an informal group of artists who would come together in the evening to sketch and visit places which could feed their imaginations and enrich their art.  Danby’s own art was characterized by an imaginative flair–always landscapes, yet always dramatic and sometimes even mystical.

Danby was born on November 16, 1793 in County Wexford, Ireland, but he spent much of his life in London.  He remained close to the other members of the Bristol School for many years after he left.
