Théodore Géricault was born in Rouen, France on September 26, 1791. He was one of the earliest painters of the Romantic period and was very influential to the art of that time. Shown below are some of the works he did which fit that Romantic style, emphasizing passionate emotion and the glory of the past and present. Géricault himself was inspired by artists such as Rubens, Rembrandt, and Michelangelo, among others, and he copied their paintings in order to achieve his skill level and develop his talent.
The featured painting is entitled Evening. It was painted as one of a series of four landscapes intended to depict the different times of day that he painted in his studio in Paris. Only three were completed. Evening brings to life the ruins of an aqueduct in the Italian countryside, while Morning was set in Munich and Noon in Paris.
Below are shown Riderless Racers at Rome, Heroic Landscape with Fishermen, and Wounded Cuirassier Leaving the Field of Battle.
