Karl Bryullov was born on December 12, 1799 in St. Petersburg, Russia.  He was one of the leading artists in the transition of styles between neoclassicism and romanticism in his country.  Though known by his ties to Russia, he was drawn to Italy and studied there, and many of his paintings reflect Italian culture and history.
