Giovanni Lanfranco was born on January 26, 1582. He was a Baroque Italian painter.
Lanfranco was involved in decorating many churches in Rome and is known for his dramatic approach to depicting the Biblical scenes on which he focused. He painted ceilings especially, and his lively scenes fit well there; to those who chose to gaze up into the splendor, he presented a riveting story experience which could be entered into so fully. He also painted works on the easel such as the above Annunciation. It is considered to be one of his finest masterpieces.
